Upon reading the following you may want to respond.  Letters to the editor can be sent to the above address.  You must provide a home address and daytime telephone number.  There is a one page limit.  I have found that the shorter the letter the more likely it is to be printed.  If letters are mailed in they must be signed.  Our comebacks need to be well thought out and intelligent...........

The LNG opponents want to stop progress

Recently I received a pamphlet from the anti-liquefied natural gas/pipeline people that is by far one of the most irresponsible information pieces that I have ever witnessed. Not only is most of the information misleading, but also some of the information is simply false. I believe the group that is representing itself as the “Southern Oregon Pipeline Information Project,” owes the public an apology for putting out such information.

First, a picture of a pipeline used in the brochure is that of one that resembles the above-ground Alaska pipeline and is shown rambling through the hills. The planned pipeline will be underground and in no way will have any similarity to the pictures in this poorly done work. The above-ground pipeline is shown approaching the front of a home. That will never happen here.

In addition, such quotes as, “running flammable gas through our bay, rivers and stream?” and “snaking a six-lane highway through private property and our public lands,” simply demonstrate that the opponents are struggling to come up with anything to bolster their position, including playing on the unnecessary fears of the people.

The opponents of the LNG/pipeline project continue to insult the intelligence of the people of Southern Oregon by focusing on such poor information. Their “win-at-all-cost” attitude is placing their own poorly focused agenda ahead of the future economic well-being of this generation and those to follow.

The group, which is headquartered in a business suite in Medford, has interjected itself into the future of the economy of the Bay Area. They have provided a “front” for local opposition, who at least are allowed to have their own post office box.

The citizens of Coos County have suffered from a lack of good-paying jobs for too long, and it is because of small groups of people like this who do not seem to care if others have an opportunity to provide a good income and economic stability for their families. Such groups also can take credit for contributing to our struggling schools, 60 percent of our children being on a subsidized lunch program, our hospital having to write off a large percentage of billings due to people not having health insurance, and for the socioeconomic fallout from a struggling economy.

Enough is enough. I invite you to join me in supporting progress and the positive economic changes that the LNG/pipeline projects will bring to our Coos County communities.

Ronald K. Opitz  -  Executive director

South Coast Development Council, Inc.

Coos Bay

NOTE : The South Coast Development Council (SCDC) is a quasi government operation.  It was formed about four years ago to develop local business opportunities and to recruit business to this area.  It is in fact a private corporation with few, perhaps two, employees.  During it's four years, Ron Opitz is the second employed manager and has been with SCDC for about three years now.  In three years time........what has he accomplished??  The organization has reported spending more than $1 million of private and taxpayers dollars during it's four years.   That money, which comes from both private sources and from you the taxpayer because our city and the county governments send funds to SCDC annually, goes for salaries and for office expenses.   It's a nice office.   SCDC is obligated to provide a copy of each of their annual tax returns for your review.  I suggest that you ask for copies and then ask yourself if Opitz should be the one criticizing others.  Time after time we have been told by prospective businesses to this area, including Jordan Cove Energy, Home Depot, Lowe's, ACS, and others, that they found us, we didn't find them.  SCDC has apparently created two jobs in four years.....Opitz and his assistant.  They apparently do not do their homework ahead of time as indicated by the above letter from Mr. Opitz,  a person who spent more than 30 years at Northwest Natural.  I believe that the SCDC board of directors, and that includes the former publisher of The World paper and the Mayor of Coos Bay, have supported the Jordan Cove Energy Project from day one.  SCDC must create jobs, any jobs at this point, to justify all this money that they have spent.

The pipeline flyer in question was designed at my request and is far more than I could have hoped for.  Obviously Ron Opitz is running scared.  The website www.nocaliforniapipeline.com  will be up and running very soon. We are well on our way to defeating this LNG terminal and pipeline.

In regards to the jobs issue, the facts are this; At a local business meeting recently, three of our larger companies - Sause Bros, Reese Electric, and Chambers Plumbing and Heating, announced that they had job openings with good Family Wages but were unable to get qualified help to fill them. The Home Depot will hire at least 150. If Lowe's decides to locate here they will employ at least 150. When the transportation bill is signed, American Bridge in Reedsport should hire about 50 people at high wages. There are signs all over town trying to recruit people for local jobs. If you want to work, there is work here ......if you are qualified.   We don't need this gas nor the risks to our safety that this LNG terminal and the pipeline would bring to our communities.  Our area deserves far better.
